Long ago, a young man asked Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, the secret of Success.

Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning and he would reveal it to him.

The young man barely slept that night, as eagerness and curiosity kept his mind from drifting into the night’s slumber. And as soon as dawn struck, he was out the door, making his way to the river.

When he arrived, Socrates asked the young man to walk with him into the water.

Puzzled, yet curious beyond words, he walked into the river, fully clothed, and ready for his master's big reveal---the secret of success itself!

What he discovered wasn't exactly what he had in mind, for within a matter of seconds, he found himself being held under the water by Socrates.

At first he thought it was an exercise in seeing what others miss, so he opened his eyes under the water...greeted only by the darkness and the cold.

As his air began to run out, the young man started to panic.

"Ah ha!” he said to himself, trying to keep his composure..."Do not panic! That must be my master's lesson for me!"

Yet his newfound calm in the face of disaster soon dissolved into absolute terror, as his air ran out completely.

The young man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him under water until he started turning blue.

After what seemed like an eternity, Socrates pulled the drowning boy from the waters, as he panted furiously for every ounce of air he could muster.

"WHY?” screamed the boy, once he could gather the least bit of his strength back, as his heart slowly stopped pounding out of his chest.

Socrates looked at the boy, smiled, and simply asked, “What did you want the most when you were under the water?”

The young man replied “Air!"

Socrates said: “That’s the secret to success. When you want success as badly as you wanted air, then and only then, will you get it."
